Few days ago, I’ve been asked a great question: Does Kefir help with weight loss? Here is how Kefir is not only helping you lose weight (if you have an appropriate weight loss plan, Kefir alone won’t do anything for your weight), but can also help you detox and digest better.
What is Kefir?
Kefir is a kind of fermented milk drink that uses a combination of yeasts and bacteria to form kefir grains. The symbiotic matrix of sugars, lipids and proteins highly resembles the appearance of a cauliflower. And because of the presence of many different yeasts and bacteria in kefir grains, the combination becomes a highly variable lactic acid bacteria community that offers numerous benefits to human health.
One of the many advantages that a person can get from drinking kefir is the apparent reduction of high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. A study conducted on the health benefit of kefir has shown that it can aid the digestion of dairy and lactose products, which are shown to produce intolerances among children and adults alike. Results have also shown that the compounds present in kefir have antioxidant and antimutagenic properties, which could bring about positive effects to weight loss and overall health. Those benefits are actually due to the bacterias in the Kefir, which we can also called be found in pro-biotics. You can have Pro-biotics in different forms: Kefir, Kombucha, or buy it in forms of capsules.
Different Types of Kefir
There are two major types of kefir namely water kefir and milk kefir. It is important that we understand the nature of these two products for us to learn more about the health benefit of kefir.
Also known as tibicos, water kefir is the type that is highly preferred by vegans and highly recommended for individuals who have intolerance to lactose products. It is prepared by combining water kefir grains, sugar and water. It has more versatility compared to milk kefir because it can be mixed with different kinds of vegetable or fruit juices to enhance its flavor and can serve as a great substitute to soda drinks. The health benefit of kefir when prepared this way becomes even greater because it promotes better digestion and stimulates detoxification processes to take place within the human body.
Known as the traditional form, milk kefir has been used for hundreds of years already and it contains most of the benefits that milk can offer like supplying the body with its need for calcium, protein, B vitamins, folic acid and other minerals. However, it also contains a certain amount of lactose so those with lactose intolerances better drink it moderately or simply avoid it totally. You would not be able to appreciate the health benefit of kefir if your body will show negative reactions once you drink milk kefir.
Being a fermented product with high probiotic content, kefir is definitely good for the health since it can make digestion less energy consuming and the body will have more energy to spend on the natural process of detoxification. As a result, one can observe a gradual but steady loss of unwanted weight, which normally happens when toxins are eliminated from the system.
The friendly microorganisms present in this cultured and enzyme-rich drink makes it nutritious and therapeutic as well. Another health benefit of kefir that people can count on is that it helps in restoring the system’s natural bacteria especially after undergoing antibiotic therapy. It can cause the formation of clean mucous which is the most ideal environment for friendly bacteria inside the human body.
How to Enjoy Kefir
Aside from drinking milk or water kefir, both young children and old folks can enjoy kefir in the form of smoothies. The drinking style that you can apply to kefir is quite similar to how people enjoy yogurt as a drink. The tart and refreshing flavor of kefir is great for those who are looking for healthy drink alternatives. Kefir has the amazing ability of keeping the cleanliness of the colon because it can aid in digesting the food that you eat. And since the body becomes more balanced, food cravings can be eliminated and that what makes kefir an essential part of any weight loss programs.
