Believed to emerge about two billion years ago, chlorella is a spherical shaped and microscopic algae which is known to have the highest chlorophyll content in all the members of the plant kingdom. Its existence was only discovered in the 19th century and it is known in biology as the first plant form that has a distinct nucleus. Traditional Japanese medicine has been using chlorella for many years and now it is already used as a medicine and nutritional supplement all over the world.

Here is a list of advantages that chlorella can offer to humans:

  • Acts as a Detox Agent

With its high content of beta carotene and B vitamins, chlorella prevents the body from absorbing free radicals that may be hazardous to the cells. Instead, the vitamins bond with toxins and help the body in flushing out harmful elements from the system. chlorella also helps in cleaning the bloodstream by using its fibrous material to bind with pesticides and heavy metals that may build up inside the human body. As a result, it protects the liver and helps maintain clean blood by efficiently carrying away metabolic wastes from the tissues.

  • Controls Blood Pressure and Stabilizes Blood Sugar

Statistics show that stroke and heart attack are just two of the common causes of fatalities worldwide. People with high blood pressure are considered a high risk group. Those who take chlorella as a food supplement manifest a substantial decrease in blood pressure. In a similar manner, chlorella also helps in normalizing blood sugar levels and supports energy metabolism as well as healthy heart and brain functions.

  • Promotes Healthy pH Levels of the Body

The ideal pH levels for humans is about 7.2 to 7.4 but most people these days have a pH of 2.7 because of poor eating habits. It is hard to maintain a neutral pH since most of the foods we eat are processed, fast foods and junk foods. Most of us are so fond of soft drinks which also harm our body’s pH levels. By taking chlorella, you can lessen the acid levels in your body and reduce your risk of certain diseases like cancer.

  • Improves Digestion

Because chlorella has high chlorophyll content, it can aid digestion by setting its fibers into action during the digestive process. As a result, constipation and upset stomachs are minimized and foul smelling stools can also be remedied.  Studies show that halitosis may be associated with problems inside the stomach and taking chlorella can also help solve the problem with bad breath.

  • Helps Fight Cancer

Medical research conducted by a team of experts at Kyushu University in Japan showed that chlorella substantially slowed down the development of cancer cells in tumors based on a study performed on mice. Even if there is no substantiation that it will have the same effect on humans, chlorella is still believed to have the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth in tumors as suggested by the American Cancer Society. In addition, cancer patients may also take chlorella as a supplement in order to reduce chemotherapy side effects.

What Forms Can We Ingest Chlorella?

With its reputation as a superfood for humans, chlorella is one of the most extensively used food supplement not only in Asian countries but around the globe. It is an algae that grows in fresh waters and processed into liquid extract, powder or tablet form for human consumption.

Although side effects may not be very common while taking chlorella, it is highly recommended to consult a qualified health professional to avoid any possible allergic reactions. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and people with weak immune system, autoimmune diseases, iodine sensitivity and allergies should not take chlorella in any form for it may do more harm than good.
